At Hawai‘i Care Choices, we hold a deep and unwavering belief: no one should have to leave their island, their loved ones, or the community they know to receive compassionate, high-quality care when faced with a serious or chronic illness.

More than 35 years ago, our founding Executive Director, Shigeko Chang, had this same vision. She worked tirelessly to educate our community on the value of hospice care, laying the foundation for Hospice of Hilo—now Hawai‘i Care Choices—to become the trusted, Medicare-certified program it is today.

That legacy lives on through the leadership of our current CEO, Brenda S. Ho, whose dedication continues to grow and strengthen our mission. Under her guidance, our organization has expanded to meet the evolving needs of our community through Palliative, Hospice, Care Home, and Bereavement care, rooted in compassion, cultural respect, and clinical excellence.

We know that the best end-of-life care is not a moment, but a journey. It begins with awareness and planning—ideally at the time of diagnosis—and continues with ongoing support for both patients and their loved ones. Our team walks alongside each individual with care that is deeply personal, time-intensive, and often not reimbursed by insurance.
