Mahalo for supporting Palliative, Hospice and Bereavement care in East Hawai‘i

It is our firm belief that people should never have to go off island, leaving their loved ones and the community they know, to receive quality care when chronically or seriously ill. Thirty-five years ago, Shigeko Chang, our founding Executive Director, also believed this, and it is this conviction that helped her work tirelessly to educate the public on the benefits of hospice care while laying the foundation for Hospice of Hilo, now Hawai'i Care Choices, to grow into the Medicare-certified program it is today.

The best End-of-Life care is a continuum that begins with awareness and planning and is activated at initial diagnosis, preferably years before entering the final quarter of life. Palliative, Hospice, and Bereavement care ensures that patients and those who love them are supported by a coordinated team that walks alongside each person in need. This high-touch approach is time and labor intensive - and is often not reimbursed by insurers. It is because of donors like you that these necessary services remain options.

We are encouraged to see recent state and national discussions surrounding healthcare beginning to embrace the importance of improving access to health care measures that promote quality of life. This belief has been our focus all along and will continue to be so.

Mahalo for sharing this appeal with your friends, family, and networks to support our work.
