Our Hoʻoilo (Winter) 2025 newsletter is now available! This edition brings a fresh look at the season’s stories, events, and updates that matter most to our community. Whether you prefer flipping through the beautifully designed pages online or reading the accessible PDF version, there is something here for everyone. Let’s explore the key features and insights that make this newsletter a valuable read for the season.
A New Look: The Aloha Mau Newsletter
Our newsletter is growing, just like our connection to the community we serve. We’ll still share stories of the care we give to our patients and their families, but now we’re also shining light on the good things happening all around East Hawaiʻi — the partnerships, the teamwork, and the little moments that make a big difference.
Through these stories, we hope you can feel how Hawaiʻi Care Choices goes beyond hospice and palliative care. We’re here to help strengthen the health, resilience, and well-being of our whole East Hawaiʻi ‘ohana through aloha mau.
Here are a couple highlights of what you'll find inside...
ʻOluʻolu, Pleasant Acts: Volunteer Services Spotlight
To celebrate the spirit of service that makes our mission possible, we’re honored to share the stories of four remarkable volunteers. Each brings a unique journey that led them to Hawaiʻi Care Choices—whether inspired by personal experience, a desire to give back, or a calling to share aloha through compassionate care. Their stories remind us that no matter where we come from, we can all make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Learn more about volunteering on our website!
ʻAhonui, Patience and Compassion: New Members of our ʻOhana Get It!
At Hawaiʻi Care Choices, our newest team members are already showing what true ʻahonui looks like. Spiritual Counselor Dr. Bernard Marks brings a calm, steady presence that helps people feel seen and safe. Jen Aguilar, our Volunteer Manager, channels her island roots into building meaningful connections between volunteers and families. And Laura Davis, our Community Bereavement Counselor, welcomes everyone with genuine aloha, offering comfort, peace, and a non-anxious presence. Together, they strengthen our ʻohana with patience, compassion, and deep commitment to care. Get to know each of them in this edition.
Mālama is Caring for Community: Focus on Bereavement Support
At Hawaiʻi Care Choices, we believe nobody should carry their grief by themselves. Our community bereavement programs are free and open all year — for keiki, teens, and adults, even if your loved one wasn’t on hospice. Through groups, activities, and safe spaces to talk story and heal, we meet people right where they’re at and help them find hope, together with others who understand.
